An object that once made sound becomes a surface that holds an image.

Surfaces
The figure stays. What changes is what it is painted on — canvas, then paper, then porcelain, then a record that was pressed to hold a song.
Ten circular works, four painted instruments, eleven bolted metal panels. Every one of those surfaces was made for something else first.

The line
Underneath the colour there is always a drawn line — and the drawings were never studies for anything else.
Twenty-one works in charcoal, pencil and water colour. Figures worked out on the page and left there.

Amit Dutt paints in New Delhi.
Trained in applied arts, he has worked for four decades across canvas and paper — and across the things people keep: porcelain plates, gramophone records, a harmonium, a tabla. The figures recur, pale and still, whatever the surface carries them.
